When we think about Yun Ho, the words "K-pop legend" easily come to mind.
Known to most as one-half of Korean idol group TVXQ, he was born Jung Yun Ho in 1986 in Gwangju, South Korea. His family never thought he would go on to become a globally recognised superstar – Yun Ho's father worked in the legal field, and he had dreamed of becoming a public prosecutor. But all of that changed in middle school, when he formed a dance team with his classmates and competed in several dance competitions across the country.
At only 13, Yun Ho took part in the inaugural SM Best Competition in 1999 and joined SM Entertainment as a trainee in 2001. After a brief stint as Dana and Shinhwa's backup dancer, he made his official debut as member of TVXQ in 2003. The group released their first single 'Hug' a year later and made their first public appearance at a showcase with BoA and Britney Spears. Their maiden effort achieved modest sales, but by their second album Rising Sun, their status as the hottest group in K-pop was cemented. In 2009, three members left the group and Yun Ho, along with bandmate Chang Min, continued their future activities as a duo.
The popularity of BoA in Japan paved the way for second-generation idol groups like TVXQ to enter the Japanese music industry. The boys became regulars on Japanese music shows and their Japanese releases often ranked on the Oricon charts. In 2018, TVXQ made history as the top touring Korean act in the country, selling over 1.3 million concert tickets.
Dance has always been Yun Ho's passion, but the 32-year-old has also made his transition from a musician to an actor. He took on his first leading role in a romantic comedy series in 2009 and honed his craft in the musical Goong. He returned to the small screen in King of Ambition in 2009 and his performance earned him an award at the 2013 Seoul International Drama Awards. Most recently, he starred alongside Kyung Soo Jin in the fantasy-romance series Meloholic.
Yet for all his achievements, Yun Ho remained passionate about his career. After his return from his mandatory military service, he touched on his desire to do more to promote the Korean culture on several variety shows. Labelled as "SM's passionate trio" with Super Junior's Si Won and SHINee's Min Ho, he often expressed just how much he wished to do for the new generation of idols.
